Hit Filipino Musical Mula sa Buwan Is Having Another Run in December

(SPOT.ph) Mula sa Buwan, an all-original Filipino musical by Pat Valera and William Elvin, closed its run at the Samsung Theatre in Makati City on September 18. But if you missed one of their 13 shows during the limited run, don't fret! During the matinee's curtain call, Gab Pangilinan (who plays Roxane) announced that they're having another run in December. The exact dates have yet to be announced.

"Sana po magkita-kita muli tayo sa December. Though we will not be extending this run, we hope to see you in December, so please do invite your family and friends. Maraming maraming salamat sa pag-welcome sa amin lahat sa pagbabalik ng teatro at sa pagbabalik namin sa buwan," Pangilinan said to a sold-audience audience during the Sunday show.

Mula sa Buwan opened on August 26 at the newly constructed Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati. All five shows of its closing weekend were sold out, which was great news considering that the production had to postpone its original schedule (September 9 to 11).

But that wasn't only the big reveal during Sunday's shows. On the gala night's curtain call, Myke Salomon (who plays the role of Cyrano, on top of being Mula sa Buwan's musical director) proposed to his real-life Roxane onstage.

The surprise proposal started with a cast member handing over a letter addressed to Pangilinan, as letter-writing is a common theme in Mula sa Buwan. "Maaari ka bang imbitahin maging ligaya, pangarap, at pag-asa?" asked Salomon. He then got down on both knees and asked for his co-star's hand in marriage, who gave a resounding yes. The musical's cast and crew graced them with a shower of confetti.

In a Facebook post, Pangilinan said: "For those asking for a full video, don’t worry, pinapa-score ko lang sa jowa-turned-fiance ko (wuw!) pero search niyo lang kasi nauna nang mag-post ang mga minamahal naming family, friends, and countrymen."

Mula sa Buwan is based on Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac and Francisco "Soc" Rodrigo's Filipino translation of the French classic. The sarsuwela-esque production is set in 1940s Manila, where Cyrano (Salomon) is an ROTC cadet and Roxane (Pangilinan) is a blushing colegiala. Christian (Markii Stroem), the lead's best friend, falls in love with the beautiful damsel.

The musical was first staged in 2016, and again in 2017 and 2018. They also produced bits and pieces of the show: a one-night-only musical concert in October 2019, online streaming of a few scenes in April 2021, and playback of the musical concert's highlights in May 2021. Back in May 2020, they were hoping to have a rerun in the following year to celebrate the first run of their original Cyrano: Isang Sarswuela. Of course, that didn't happen, given the quarantine restrictions, but we'd say the wait was well worth it, especially for those who got to witness the surprise proposal.
