(SPOT.ph) The San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone. The largest and most popular gathering of all things comic books and pop culture happened last month from July 25 to July 28, where you probably saw Robert Downey Jr. announce he's now a Marvel villain, Apl.de.ap launch a mobile platform for comics called HALO HALO, and even the Eraserheads drop the trailer for their upcoming documentary. A lot went down in those four days—and somewhere in the huge convention, Filipino komiks made their own mark, too. Thanks to California-based bookshop Hot Tropiks, the San Diego Comic-Con was able to check out all things Filipino komiks.
Filipino Komiks made a splash at the San Diego Comic-Con with Hot Tropiks
Hot Tropiks set up shop at the San Diego Comic-Con's Small Press section. They were able to bring Filipino storytelling to the forefront with titles like Ian Sta. Maria's Salamangka (Volumes 1 and 2) which carry glorious illustrations of Filipino folklore blending into the world of mortals, classics and pop-culture staples like Carlo Vergara's ZsaZsa Zaturnnah and Arnold Arre's The Mythology Class, award winners like Russel L. Molina and Ace C. Enriquez' Josefina, and so much more.

Apart from selling Filipino titles, the booth was also the hub for creators and readers, and for anyone who enjoys a great story with great visuals, to chat, meet up, and just check out what sets our komiks apart.
There were book signings by creators like Manix Abrera, Bong Redilla of Fantagraphics and Anino, and even Nathan Cayanan, who is among DC Comics' pool of up-and-coming creators. More creators also dropped by, including Ebony Soy who is behind Maloles, a graphic novel that follows an undead headhunter into the Underworld.
We also spotted Randy Ribay, author of Patron Saints of Nothing and Avatar: The Last Airbender novels drop by. Even Donkey Doug who you might have seen in The Good Place popped over to buy a book.
