(SPOT.ph) We can think of a bajillion things that go great with olive oil: pasta, pizza, salad, popcorn, that sad leftover piece of chicken that got stringy in the microwave. Coffee...is not one of them. But hey, maybe we're the ones in the wrong here. Starbucks' Italian leg seems to think otherwise, at least going by the fact that they're currently peddling olive-oil coffee drinks in the country.

Starbucks is putting olive oil in their cups of joe at their Italy-based coffee shops:
The lineup, dubbed Oleato, consists of beverages spiked with Partanna extra-virgin olive oil—and not just a small drop or two but a whole spoonful of it in each drink. Among the variants on the lineup are the Oleato Caffe Latte (with oat milk and EVOO), Oleato Iced Cortado, Oleato Ice Shaken Espresso (with oat milk, hazelnut flavor, and olive oil), and the Oleato Golden Foam Cold Brew. The mind behind the drinks? Starbucks' own Howard Schultz, who was in Sicily and learned the custom of taking a spoonful of olive oil each day—that is, alongside his daily cup of joe. Schultz was blown away by the way the two surprisingly went together, producing "an unexpected, velvety, buttery flavor that enhanced the coffee and lingers beautifully on the palate."
We know, we know; we're skeptical too. This could either be some mind-blowing tandem the rest of the world needs to know about (for what it's worth, Starbucks plans to roll it out to select markets in Japan, the Middle East, and the U.K. later this year)—or some sign of the impending apocalypse that awaits. But they must be onto something. Putting oil in coffee isn't entirely new—there's bulletproof coffee with butter and MCT oil, for one. We can also vouch for the surprisingly harmonious way good olive oil goes with desserts like chocolate cake and gelato. Maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't hesitate to try the Oleato drinks, should they make their way to their Philippine branches as well. Fingers crossed?
