(SPOT.ph) Every once in a while, you come upon something that seems to make time slow down, allowing you to absorb what's happening in all it's glory. Sometimes it's the smile lighting up the face of a loved one, or the sun's rays peeking over the horizon, most of the time, it's food. Think a slab of steak presented on a hot plate, perfectly chargrilled veggies, a seafood boil that screams "high blood", or, in this case, a perfect pastry. Just like this strawberry napoleones we got to try at Shangri-La The Fort's High Street Café. The charm of a hotel buffet isn't just in the quantity and quality of food you get after all, but in finding an absolute gem hidden amongst gems.

Touted as a "modern food hall," this dining outlet has nine stations to satisfy any craving: The Garden, The Grazing Table, Raw Bar, Noodle Station, Rustic Kitchen, The Grill Station, Asian Wok, and Sweets Selection station. There are options if you're vegan, a straight carnivore, in it for girl dinner (the deli spread can't be missed), want to fill up on salmon (sashimi, gravlax, grilled, whatnot), have an intense sweet tooth, or more.

What makes The High Street Café different is that they have curated dishes prepared à la minute. In other words, they prep it only once you order, for a truly freshly cooked plate. We got to try the double-boiled chicken soup; a clear, nourishing broth with bits of tender chicken is heated and served in a young coconut. You're meant to to scrape the soft flesh and slurp it with the soup for a taste that's partially binakol, partially tinola, and all around soul-warming.

Don't pass up the chance to order their signature laksa either. If you love noodles and tons of flavor, then this is the dish for you. The laksa came with the freshest and plump-est shrimp we've ever had.

When you're first stomach is full and the second is hankering for some sweets, the dessert station is more than equipped. Take your pick from cakes and confectioneries, just make sure to grab at least one (or five) of the pink napoleones. This treat is available only at Shangri-La The Fort's High Street Cafe, and with it's perfectly light-and-flaky crust-to-light-creamy-filling ratio, and a hint of tart from the pink icing, you best make the most out of every bite. We're not kidding when we say the best napoleones we've had may very well be this one we found smackdab in the Metro.

"The direction we have for High Street Café is to serve more comfort food with stories behind it—memory makers. Everyone contributed in deciding what the signature dishes are and made sure each one leaves an impact on our valued guests," says Executive Chef Joris Rycken in a statement. This means that each dish has a personal touch to it. And don't expect the same things every visit either! The menu is always on rotation, with new dishes coming in.
