(SPOT.ph) The dining scene in Manila is constantly growing, with a whole treasure trove of cuisines that you can choose from to suit your cravings. And although for the longest time you could mostly only find Western or Asian eats in these parts, there's a growing number of purveyors giving us a taste of African food—one of which is Mapishi Food House. Specializing in East-African (specifically Swahili) cuisine, Mapishi opened their first outpost in Quezon City and were embraced by food lovers in the North looking to try out global flavors. Now, those in the South can see what the fuss is all about, as Mapishi has officially opened their second branch at BF Homes, Parañaque!

Get a taste of the flavors of East Africa at this new restaurant in BF Homes:
Located on Aguirre Avenue—specifically right beside Picada Tapeo Restaurante—Mapishi Food House's BF Homes branch goes for a bright and modern look, with greenery as well as elements like art pieces on the walls that emphasize their East-African soul. They've got an airconditioned indoor-dining area, but you can also opt to take your meal outdoors as they've got al-fresco tables as well.
Of course, the food is really where it's at, and there's a whole array of flavorful eats to discover on Mapishi's lineup. You can go for a relatively light bite with dishes like the Chicken Diko Diko (P125)—a masala wrap with garlic yogurt sauce for creaminess—or the Beef Mishkaki, or rightfully spiced barbecued skewers with a vibrant chachandu salsa on the side. But they love their rice like we Filipinos do, so you don't want to miss their biryani dishes—including the Lamb Biryani (starts at P340) with basmati rice topped with a special sauce and fried onions plus garlic yogurt and kachumbari salad. Alternatively, try the pilau, a Swahili dish of rice cooked with spices, served with a protein, chachandu salsa, and kachumbari salad; the Beef Pilau (P290) features fork-tender beef and gives you festive and flavorful bites.
It's also well worth trying venturing out of your comfort zone and trying the Ugali Firigisi (P270). You'd be hard-pressed to find this Tanzanian classic elsewhere in Manila—and as foreign as the name sounds, it delivers hearty and soul-soothing flavors that are real easy to cozy up to. Making up the dish are of a soulful stew of chicken gizzards; a stick-to-your-ribs mix of beans cooked in coconut milk; and maize porridge to help soak up the stronger flavors of the gizzards and the beans. A tomato-onion salad and veggies on the side help balance things out, so the resulting experience stays cohesive; consider it a trip by taste to Tanzania on a plate.
