From drink-ified versions to one topped with Basque burnt cheesecake.
(SPOT.ph) Amazingly we’ve made it to the end of April—and though the month took off on an unusually cold start, it’s definitely gotten hotter as the weeks went on. And not that we love the heat per se, but if anything, it also gives you the perfect excuse to go for an icy cold dessert to help your body cool off! We don’t know about you, but nothing says “cool” (literally, and figuratively if you ask us) like the classic samalamig that is halo-halo—and though we definitely have our go-to classic versions, it’s also well worth venturing out of what’s familiar and into the more playful and modern realm. Enter these one-of-a-kind takes on halo-halo, which are as creative as they are scrumptious sources of relief from the summer heat.

Taro Halo from LiberTea
Army Navy’s little sibling Libertea is not one to shy away from fun flavors—and in the Taro Halo (P170) it’s all about the nuttiness of taro paired with halo-halo sinkers like jellies, jackfruit, ube, beans, pinipig, and of course, leche flan. With a good ratio of sinkers to the taro drink base, this dessert is the kind where you can go alternate between sipping and spooning as you please.
Mango Basque, Ube Turon, Knickerbocker Halo-Halo from Workshop
Though Workshop is best known for their bakes, they go the more refreshing light with their line of Filipino coolers—which incorporates new flavors and textures into the classic dessert. On the classic end of the spectrum is the Ube Turon Halo-Halo (P275) which has familiar halo-halo toppings on ube milk ice, and is lent crunch with banana turon; and the fruitier Knickerbocker Halo-halo (P295) based on the Zamboangan classic, with jellies, mangoes, a strawberry compote, strawberry ice cream, and peach-mango turon over shaved-milk coconut ice. Don’t miss the one-of-a-kind Mango Basque Halo-Halo (P295)—where cubes of Basque cheesecake join the party of fresh mangoes, a graham coconut streusel, vanilla ice cream, peach-mango turon, and milk ice.
Rainbow + Chocolate Halo Halo from Kuya J
Kuya J has gained fame for their vivid and purple-yam powered ube halo-halo, but they’re out to prove that’s not all they’ve got under their sleeves. In the Rainbow Halo Halo (P140) they go for a whimsical mix of pink banana, blue bubblegum, yellow melon, and white vanilla flavored slush that’s mixed with pieces of tropical jelly, mallows, and more sprinkles—talk about a colorful treat. A more indulgent option is the Chocolate Halo Halo (P140), where brownies, chocolate fudge, cashews, and toasted marshmallows add a decadent dimension to the typically lighter dessert.
Bonus: Halo-Halo Croissant from The Daily Knead
So granted, this isn’t an iced dessert at all—but we had to include the ingenious e Halo-Halo Croissant (P270/piece) from The Daily Knead, which takes the flavors of the Filipino dessert and turns it into a flaky-meets-creamy pastry. Tucked inside The Daily Knead’s signature buttery croissants is a melange of halo-halo-inspired elements: corn custard, leche flan, toasted milk cream, their own homemade ube halaya, a buko compote, pinipig, and pandan jelly.
