Must-Watch Movies This October 2024

(SPOT.ph) A new month is just around the corner, and trust us when we say September will be over in a blink. This month saw the release of Transformers One and the fanfare around Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and you can count on another month to bring more blockbusters. October's selection includes suspense and horror, adventure, and some much-needed magic and wonder. We'll update the story as more movies get release dates, so be sure to check back often!

Bagman

Release date: October 2

Sam Claflin stars as Patrick McKee, a father whose childhood trauma, the malevolent creature Bagman, returns to haunt his own family years later. Patrick must conquer his deepest inner fears in order to save his loved ones, especially his son, from being snatched by the infamous Bagman. This horror movie is every parents' worst fear for their child, and it's brought to life by actors Antonia Thomas as Patrick's wife Karina and Carell Rhoden who plays their son, Jake.

Joker: Folie a Deux

Release date: October 2

Joaquin Phoenix returns as the eponymous Joker, or failed comedian Arthur Fleck, who has now been institutionalized in Arkham for his crimes as the wide-smiled clown. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur encounters what seems to be true love, and music that was in him all along. The Joker's not alone anymore—Harley Quinn, played by singer and actress Lady Gaga, finally enters the scene to inject some zing into this psychological thriller film. Zazie Beetz will reprise her role as neighbor Sophie Dumond, while Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener are joining the cast.

The Wild Robot

Release date: October 9

In future Earth, shipwrecked robot Roz must make the most of his new environment to escape the deserted island. While she's on a learning safe mode to garner enough information to communicate with animals, Roz comes face to face with a novel struggle; How to care for a baby goose she's gotten attached to and vice versa. The animated film stars Lupita Nyong'o in the leading role, along with a star-studded cast comprising Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Catherine O'Hara, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. We're really excited for this one, given all the hype it got at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Smile 2

Release date: October 16

Global pop sensation Skye Riley is about to embark on a new world tour. Everything's fine and dandy until she begins to experience unexplainable and terrifying experiences. As the mounting horrors and pressures of fame mess with her head, Skye must conquer her dark past to gain some semblance of control over her life before she loses her grip. The sequel to Smile stars Naomi Scott as Skye and features Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raul Castillo, Dylan Gelula, and Ray Nicholson in its supporting cast. Kyle Gallner will reprise his role in Smile 2, and it looks like we're about to see a Drew Barrymore cameo, too.

The Colors Within

Release date: October 23

Need a break from all the horror and suspense? Consider The Colors Within, a Japanese animated film that celebrates unlikely friendships and connections. High school girl Totsuko Higurashi (voiced by Sayu Suzukawa) has the gift of seeing the colors of emotions in people. In an attempt to prevent negative emotions from taking over in her friends and family, Totusko reads situations and tells white lies to improve circumstances. At an antique bookshop in the corner of Nagasaki, she meets a stunning woman whose color matches her beauty, and a music-loving boy trying to put together a band. The three unlikely people come under one banner...to play in a band.

This is another one to keep tabs on, as it won the Golden Goblet Award for Best Animation Film at the 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival.

Venom: The Last Dance

Release date: October 23

Surprise, your favorite human host and alien symbiote duo is back! Venom: The Last Dance is the sequel to Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and still stars Tom Hardy as both Eddie Brock and Venom. This time around, Brock and Venom are on the run from both their worlds and must make crucial decisions to assure their survival. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham round out the cast of the third Venom film.
