Must-Watch Movies This December 2024

(SPOT.ph) And just like that, it's already December. This month's round-up of movies bring intense action along with some heartwarming tales to match the holiday season. After all, Christmas in the Philippines is equal parts joy and stress at work, the streets, and even family reunions. Consider de-stressing with a flick or two.

Do keep in mind that the Metro Manila Film Festival will take over theaters starting Christmas Day, so plan your budget and movie dates accordingly. We'll also have a guide up for the festival soon!

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Release date: December 11

Upcoming anime fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Helm Hammerhand, the legendary king of Rohan, and his family must protect their kingdom against a Dundlending army. If you're wondering why the main character's name sounds familiar, Helm later becomes the namesake for Helm's Deep. Brian Cox, Gaia Wise, Luke Pasqualino, and Miranda Otto lend their voices to the characters in the animated flick.

Kraven the Hunter

Release date: December 11

Marvel Comics is keeping the tradition of superhero films alive, this time with Kraven the Hunter, which features the comic-book character of the same name. Kraven's complicated relationship with his father sets him out on a road to vengeance, fuelling him to become the greatest hunter. Playing Kraven is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, and Russell Crowe rounding out the cast.

Mufasa: The Lion King

Release date: December 20

Disney is back with another musical adaptation with Mufasa: The Lion King, serving as both sequel and a prequel to the 2019 remake of the 1994 film The Lion King. Rafiki narrates the tale of two lions, Mufasa and Taka, to Kiara, Mufasa's granddaughter and Simba and Nala's daughter. The story catalogs orphan Mufasa's life as he befriends the young prince Taka and become close brothers. Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyonce Knowles Carter reprise their roles from the remake, with Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Leenie James, and Annika Noni Rose joining the cast. Beyonce's daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, will also make her feature film debut.

Nosferatu

Release date: December 25

Horror lovers, rejoice. Nosferatu is a familiar name to seasoned spooksters, and this 2024 version is an adaptation of the 1922 German film, based on Bram Stroker's novel, Dracula. The film follows a Transylvanian vampire who stalks a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany. The star-studded cast features Bill Skarsgard, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe.

Gladiator II

Release date: November 13

Gladiator II takes place 20 years after the OG, where Lucius, the heir of Roman emperors, lives a secluded life away from the capital's cruelty and politics. Roman soldiers invade, forcing Lucius to fight as a gladiator and restore the empire to its former glory. Connie Nielsen, who plays Lucilla in the original film is reprising her role, joined by Paul Mescal as Lucius, Pedro Pascal as the lethal General Marcus Acacius, Denzel Washington as gladiator Macrinus, and Fred Hechinger and Joseph Quinn as emperors Caracalla and Geta, respectively.

Christmas with the Chosen: Holy Night

Release date: December 11

Experience the birth of Jesus Christ from the perspective of his parents; a young mother carrying a child through a miracle and a shepherd boy with a great calling and responsibility placed on his shoulders. Music performances and monologues narrate the familiar story, along with a never-before-seen performance from singer Andrea Bocelli.
