(SPOT.ph) In the rush of all the exciting news and fresh footage coming out of San Diego Comic-Con over the past week, you may have missed that the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has begun to shift. Yup, no longer are superheroes with S symbols and bats on their chests taking center spotlight over at DC Films this year. Instead, the rest of 2022 will be focused on highlighting two particularly muscular dudes with lightning bolts on their chests, who couldn't be more different from each other.
We are of course talking about Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson and his long-awaited interpretation of the stone-cold anti-hero Black Adam, as well as Zachary Levi and his colorful and irreverent child superhero, Shazam.

Black Adam (October 21, 2022)
The new Comic-Con sneak peek for Black Adam showcases more of the anti-hero's dead-serious nature, as he faces off against the heroes of the Justice Society of America; Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Hawkman (Aldis Hodge).
Over 5,000 years ago, in the fictional country of Kahndaq, Black Adam became one of the original beings to receive the power of the wizard Shazam. However, Black Adam is not as lovable and virtuous as Billy Batson is (shocker, we know), as he uses his strength mostly to seek revenge against those unjust to him.
From the sneak peek, it seems as though the Justice Society of America are calling upon Black Adam to help them save the world, and the Rock is just not having it. Although, his love for the mortal woman that pops up a couple times throughout the trailer could be enough to convince him later on in the film to stand up for truth, justice, and whatever else the Rock is cooking.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (December 15, 2022)
Our first look at the sequel to 2019's Shazam! film is fittingly packed with references to Fast & Furious, the Conjuring franchise, and the rest of the DC Extended Universe. Our favorite bits are the Annabelle doll just sitting in the pediatrician's play area and the Vin Diesel "family" reference, given that this movie is written by Chris Morgan, who wrote seven out of the 10 Fast & Furious films. Self-referential humor, you know you love to see it.
We also now get an idea of the film's plot, which revolves around the Shazam! family beefing with the Daughters of Atlas. It does play more comedic than the Rock's superhero flick, as there's apparently a scene where Shazam and the film's main villain Hespera (Helen Mirren) trade chuckles over a serving of sandwiches and fries.
However, it does go without saying, you don't cast Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler as literal warrior gods and just not have them kick butt, so we're counting down the days until we can witness that on the big screen.
