Disturbing Documentary Alert: Religious Mother Believes Her Family Has Turned Into Zombies in New Netflix Title

(SPOT.ph) While there does come a certain thrill that comes with performing a deep dive into true-life crime cases, especially with current events that have either yet to be resolved or are still unfolding, it's undeniable that watching documentaries on these disturbing matters bring out the more empathetic side in all of us. As we hear the stories recounted by the victims and persons involved, it's hard not to ultimately view these stories as cautionary tales or striking reminders of how bizarrely cruel the world can be.

Falling into the middle of both of those views, the three-episode docu-series Sins of Our Mother has recently dropped on Netflix Philippines and hits home—literally—with a story of a mother who betrays her family when religious indoctrination convinces her that her husband and children have been possessed by demons. As you can imagine, what follows next is a truly heartbreaking scandal that you wouldn't wish upon anybody.

Lori Vallow Documentary Sins of Our Mother Now Streaming on Netflix PH

A life-long worshipper of the faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—no, not the polygamist one from Keep Sweet—Lori Vallow is a mother to three children; Colby, Tylee, and an adopted son J. J. "Being a good mom is very important to me, [as well as] being a good wife and good worker... and being all those things is not easy, so I'm basically like a ticking time bomb," video footage shows her saying early on in the documentary.

The documentary then watches her unravel in all those aspects of her life, as she delves increasingly deeper into spiritual beliefs. She talks of not being able to get much sleep due to angels giving her instructions in the middle of the night. When her eldest son marries, she hardly shows any joy or fulfillment, as she's convinced the rapture is coming.

Things take a turn when she meets a religious man of the same beliefs, Chad Daybell, who also shoots her the incredibly red flag text message that reads, "a Voice said to me: 'you will meet an extraordinary woman today who will change your life forever,'" not long after their first encounter.

The docu-series shares accounts from Lori's and Chad's close friends and families that the two would eventually come to see themselves as gods and superior beings. The couple somewhat rate the people in their lives on a scale from Level 6 Dark to Level 6 Light, and anyone on the dark side was to be considered possessed by a demon—or in their words, a "zombie"—and should be eliminated.

As a mother to a 16-year-old girl and a child with autism, as well as a wife who stands to gain one million U.S. dollars should her husband die, Lori is the last person you'd want partaking in the cult's beliefs, but alas, the documentary breaks your heart with every succeeding revelation.

Even if it doesn't provide the most insightful answers or resolutions to questions regarding the inner workings of their religious indoctrination, the relatively brief and straightforward documentary does provide an all-engrossing retelling of one of the most distinctly heartbreaking criminal cases of the past couple of years.
