We will most likely have to wait over a year before the next season shows us what sorts of sordid family drama went down during the Dance—unfortunately, we can’t utilize the power of time-jump plot devices IRL.

When talking about love in the cynical and depressing world of Game of Thrones, you can’t not mention Missandei and Grey Worm. Though only supporting characters within Daenarys’ overall campaign for the Iron Throne, the unlikely couple from Essos boasts the most wholesome and passionate romance of the entire series. This all culminates in an emotional sex scene that finally consummates the pair, on the eve of Grey Worm heading out to capture Casterly Rock in the penultimate season. It’s a tender moment, mostly because you truly feel both Grey Worm’s longing for Missandei and his hesitation towards sex due to being a eunuch. It’s sweet, hot, but ultimately, heartbreaking given what happens later during Daenarys’ war.

On this list, you’ll see a pattern emerge, wherein the best sex often leads to the greatest of downfalls (on the show, to be clear). No sex scene on the show foreshadows that dreary doom quite like Robb Stark and Talisa’s first hook-up. Anyone looking back on the series will inevitably realize that, yeah, it probably wasn’t the best idea for the young King in the North to break his oath with the Freys all for a foreign lover. Oh well, at least he got to see some spicy action on the battlefield before ultimately securing the near-destruction of his entire family at the Red Wedding. That has got to be the worst post-nut clarity anyone could ever experience.

The romance the entire series had been building up to first locked lips in the penultimate season’s final episode, and we still don’t know how to feel about it. On one hand, there are a few ways you could go wrong with a steamy nude make-out session between Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke. That brief pause to stare into each other’s eyes was the icing on the cake (innuendo not intended). However, contextually, it’s still icky that the sex scene occurred with a) Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) cautiously observing outside the room and b) in the middle of Sam’s (John Bradley) revelation that Jon is in fact Daenarys’ long-lost nephew. So… mixed. Let’s say the arousal is mixed.

Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and Ygritte (Rose Leslie)

Episode: Season 3, Episode 5 “Kissed by Fire”

Nothing hotter than an oathbreaker. Just ask Varys (Conleth Hill)! In the third season, a much more naive Jon Snow broke his vow as a brother of the Night’s Watch to not only get the freaky on, but to get the freaky on with a Wildling. Honestly, good for him. After months in the frozen and male-dominated wasteland of the North, he at least got to lose his virginity to a beautiful ginger in the hidden hot springs of a cave. Though, it’s a shame that Ygritte died not long after. At least Harrington and Leslie are married IRL. Happy endings do exist.

Episode: House of the Dragon Episode 4 “King of the Narrow Sea”

Bisecting this list, we just had to include House of the Dragon’s sex scene between Rhaenyra and Ser Criston. After four episodes of repression, Rhaenyra finally got to exercise her agency in “King of the Narrow Sea”—and boy, was it a calorie-burning exercise. Not only did she turn the tables on Daemon (Matt Smith) trying to take advantage of her in an orgy house, but she also got to bed the hottest knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Ser Criston Cole. A double-win that she almost successfully got away with lying about, too. Rather unfortunate that Alicent (Emily Carey) found out and essentially started a war over it. Even more unfortunate that Criston sacrificed all his mystique attractiveness after he fell head over heels for the uninterested Rhaenyra. However, what’s important is that the one-night stand was good.

Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) and Gendry (Joe Dempsie)

Episode: Season 3, Episode 8 “Second Sons”

Be warned that we’ve now entered the kinkier back-half of the list. Kicking it off we have the bondage and blood-sucking leeches used by Melisandre on Gendry in the third season. Poor Gendry thought this mysterious woman that he had just met wanted to make sweet love to him. Little did he know that the Red Priestess was simply trying to extract some of his blood in order for Stannis to cast a curse that would kill the three remaining enemy commanders in the War of Five Kings. R-rated fantasy television at its peak, to be honest.

Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) and Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) 

Episode: Season 2, Episode 2 “The Night Lands”

If you thought the previous entry was depraved enough, be reminded that one of Stannis and Melisandre’s first scenes in the series involve them having sex on top of a giant battle map of Westeros, which leads to Melisandre being impregnated with a shadow creature that is sent to assassinate Stannis’ younger brother Renly. This steamy sex scene is what your partner has in mind when they say you “lack ambition.”

However, this dream was quickly snatched from him when his masochistic captor swooped in, revealed it was just another one of his elaborate ploys, and then cut off his penis. Not just one of the most memorable sex scenes in Game of Thrones, but one of the most memorable scenes in general—and taking place right after the Red Wedding, that’s saying something. The scene is quite effective too, as for a moment, you almost buy into it just as Theon did.

Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones) and Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony)… and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer)

Episode: Season 2, Episode 3 “What is Dead May Never Die”

As the second younger brother to the King, Renly had virtually no shot at claiming the Iron Throne for himself—especially with Robert’s (Mark Addy) bountiful offspring count. This was perhaps why he spent most of his days seeking the pleasures men of higher status couldn’t dare be caught with. Luckily, he found a lover in Loras Tyrell and a political partnership with Loras’ sister Margaery. Renly somehow landed hot (for the twinks) sex scenes with Loras and Natalie Dormer as a wife who would do anything to please him. You could say he was lucky, but he just had to throw in his crown in the War of Five Kings and lose it all.

We end this list with the most comedic—yet strangely still hot—sex scene of Game of Thrones, the dragon lore bathtub exposition dump of the first season. Westeros has an expansive and complicated history that, at times, seems hard to translate from book to screen. Naturally, the writers decided that to keep audiences’ attention during a history lesson, the exposition dump would occur while two characters were having sex in a bathtub. In the scene, the worst Viserys talks to Khaleesi’s handmaiden about Targaryen history and how the dragons were brought from Old Valyria to Westeros, and let’s just say that the girl really likes dragon talk. We commend this scene for simultaneously being unintentionally hilarious, a stroke of genius, and an arresting sex scene to watch.
