Ateneo Remains Top PH University in THE 2024 Rankings

(SPOT.ph) Ateneo's done it again. The Ateneo de Manila is at the top of Philippine universities that made it to the 2024 Times Higher Education Asia Rankings released on April 30—a feat they're continuing from the 2023 rankings.

Ateneo made it to the 401-500 bracket in the 2024 rankings, a step down from the previous spot at the 84th, which made them the only Philippine university in the top 100 that year. Still, they keep their title as the highest ranked local university on the list. 

Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines continues slipping down the brackets, going from ranking first in 2022, to the 201-250 bracket in 2023, and now, joining De La Salle University in the 501-600 bracket. Mapua University remains at the 601+ bracket, now joined this year by the University of Santo Tomas.

Which institutions topped the 2024 THE Asia University Rankings?

1. Tsinghua University (China)

3. National University of Singapore (Singapore)
4. Nanyang Technology University (Singapore)
5. The University of Tokyo (Japan)
6. University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong)
7. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China)
8. Fudan University (China)
9. Zhejiang University (China)
10. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong)

A total of 739 institutions from 31 territories were included in this year's rankings. China's Tsingua University and Peking University keep the first and second positions for the fifth year in a row, with China having a total of five universities in the top 10. Japan's University of Tokyo climbs up from eight to fifth. South Korea's Seoul National University, which you've likely heard about in K-Dramas, continues to drift farther from the top 10 by landing at the 14th spot this year. 

The 2024 ranking includes 739 universities from 31 territories. The top 100 saw China with 33 universities, followed by South Korea with 16 universities. Japan had the most universities with 119 institutions in this year's rankings. 

THE is a UK-based group that ranks “research-intensive universities” across the globe based on teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. For the Asia University Rankings 2024, they used the same 18 performance indicators as their World University Rankings "but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions," they said in a statement. Methodology for this year "has been significantly updated" since their rankings began two decades ago.
