(SPOT.ph) Politicians say the weirdest things sometimes, especially in the Philippines. And one of our most perennially quotable politicans, Senate President Vicente "Tito" Sotto III, recently ignited a lot of feelings—and a whole lot of memes—when he was asked to comment on the Duterte administration's recent statement that they would "tolerate" Chinese fishing in the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Sotto commented that fish in our waters could have come from China, complicating the exclusivity of our ocean.Â
"The fish could be coming from China and the fish from the Philippines could be going to China," said Sotto. "If we want to be technical about it, relate it to the constitutionality of what should be owned by us. There are exclusive types of fish that are only found in China but can be found here because of migration, perhaps."
Needless to say, this comment got plenty of reactions online. Check out some of the most attention-grabbing ones so far:
Looks like Immigration has a whole lot of inspecting to do.
Do you think we'll have to make them little ID laces, too?
We'll back you up, fishies, don't worry.
Mocking Spongebob: for when you just don't know how to react.
That's one heck of a burden.
Let's not drag Nemo into this mess, please.
If this is what it takes, then so be it.
Maybe we can ask artist Jasmin Topalusic for help!
This guy knew what was going to happen.
Yup, he called it.
