Batangas to Rizal on Two Wheels? This 76-Kilometer Bike Lane Is in the Works

(SPOT.ph) Ready for a road trip (and a workout)? Cyclists can travel efficiently between CALABARZON cities soon thanks to the Department of Transportation's new bike lane.
The DOTr's expansion of active transport infrastructure includes 76.70 kilometers of Class 2 and 3 bike lanes that will connect Lipa City and Batangas City to Antipolo City, Cainta, and San Mateo in Rizal. This upcoming network holds the potential to improve the way people in Region IV-A commute on two wheels.
It is targeted to be completed by the first quarter of 2024.
“This project is a tangible expression of our dedication to combat climate change and preserving our environment for future generations,” DPWH Assistant Regional Director for Region IV-A Isidro Encarnacion said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Bike lane from Batangas to Rizal coming soon
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista led the groundbreaking ceremony on September 11 in Lipa City, Batangas, expanding its active transport infrastructure to areas outside the metro.
There are currently over 500 bike lanes in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, Bautista said, with more to come this year following the planned construction of 400 kilometers more bike lanes. It's part of DOTr's goal to establish 2,400 kilometers of protected bike lanes by 2028.
The DOTr is working with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and local government units for this region's approach to active transportation—with high hopes to improve traffic congestion while simultaneously promoting healthier and eco-friendly commuting options.
However, some of the bike lanes will not be exclusive to cyclists. This specific bike lane will be Class 2 and 3, after all. According to the Department of Public Works and Highways, bicycle facilities are classified into three categories:
- Class 1: Shared Use Path will be exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians
- Class 2: Separated Bike Lane will be distinguished by paint stripe, curb, or barrier for exclusive bicycle use
- Class 3: Shared Roadway will be officially marked as a bicycle route but can be used by motor vehicles
