
(SPOT.ph) With a few months left before the next national elections on May 9, all eyes are on the Commission on Elections—from their most recent decision on disqualification cases to guidelines of campaigning and elections amid the pandemic. And of their seven members, it seems that Commissioner Rowena V. Guanzon is not one to mince her words—and for good reason.

Who Is Rowena Guanzon?
Guanzon, whose term started on April 28, 2015 and is scheduled to end on February 2, is the last Aquino-appointed commissioner in a group of Duterte appointees. She first served as the appointed mayor of Cadiz City in Negros Occidental post-Martial Law for two years, then stayed in the same position as an elected official from 1988 to 1992. She was later appointed commissioner to the Commission on Audit in 2013.
A litigation lawyer, writer, and law professor, she is well known for her expertise in gender equality and laws on violence against women. She completed a bachelor's degree in Economics at the University of the Philippines, then graduated in the top 10 of her class at the University of the Philippines College of Law. Guanzon also has a master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.
