'Heat Wave' Is PH’s Most Searched Term on Google in 2024

(SPOT.ph) Looking at the top Google searches of the year can give us a glimpse of what mattered the most to Filipinos. From the trending personalities who made the headlines to the major events that shaped (or shook) the nation, Google Search is definitely a unique window into the past 12 months. And in 2024? It seems like everyone in the Philippines was looking for relief from the scorching heat, as “heat wave” emerged as the top Google search of the year.

Heat wave, Jaclyn Jose, Carlos Yulo among the top Google searches in the Philippines in 2024

Although temperatures have somewhat eased in the Philippines, the summer months of 2024 saw blistering heat settle over the country with the heat index soaring to record heights. It's no surprise, then, that Filipinos spent a significant amount of time searching for information about the extreme heat. Not only did the term heatwaves top Google's search trends, but climate change was also sixth on the list. 

Besides the scorching temperatures, the passing of celebrities was also top of mind in the Filipino public's consciousness. The iconic Jaclyn Jose came in second on the overall list of most-searched Google terms of the year, while One Direction member Liam Payne was eighth. 

And of course, who could forget the Olympic Games? 2024 was a successful year for the Philippines with gymnast Carlos Yulo winning the country its second and third gold medals ever. Olympics and Carlos Yulo are the third and fourth top Google searches, respectively. 

Rounding out the list are Inside Out 2 at fifth and AI-related terms (Character AI, AI detector, and Gemini).

Besides revealing the overall trending searches, Google Trends also released the top searches in a number of categories. For instance, below Carlos Yulo in trending male personalities are Nash Aguas and EJ Obiena, while BINI topped the trends among female personalities followed by Charlie Dizon and Alice Guo.

Meanwhile, K-dramas dominated the shows, with the top three in shows all Korean: Queen of Tears, Marry My Husband, and Lovely Runner. When it comes to music, Filipino music took centerstage with "Sining" by Dionela and Jay R at the top, "Maybe This Time" covered by Sarah Geronimo at third, and "Palagi" by TJ Monterde at fifth. Bruno Mars hits "APT" and "Die With a Smile" rounded out the top five searches in music.
