(SPOT.ph) When you find a closet staple that’s just right for you—fits great, goes with everything, and lasts through several cycles in the washing machine—your relationship with that piece of clothing turns into a full-blown love affair. For some, it’s a go-to black tank top that works for every occasion (we have our own personal pick and it's only P250). For others, it’s that reliable old pair of blue jeans that only gets better with age. But our most recent fashion fling (if we’re being honest, we’re ready to commit long-term), is a basic white T-shirt from Sole Academy known as the Sole Cycle Tee. For this writer in particular, it’s the best plain white tee they've ever owned.
The white T-shirt has a long and fascinating history and over a century since its rise in popularity, it remains a wardrobe essential thanks largely to its practicality and versatility. When you find the right one, it almost immediately becomes overused—the goes-with-everything style can be reached for at a moment’s notice. Enter the Sole Cycle Tee, which is now one of the most worn clothing items in my closet. I discovered this shirt while shopping through e-commerce platform Carousell, which is known primarily for its range of pre-owned items.
I check Carousell often looking for folks selling the items on my personal wish list secondhand. In this case, I was in search of the Internet-famous Cotton Jersey T-Shirt from Kim Kardashian’s loungewear and shapewear brand SKIMS. While I didn’t find it, I spotted a seller offering the Sole Academy tee, which they described as a dupe for the SKIMS tee. Intrigued by the claim—and the budget-friendly price tag—I purchased every color the seller had on hand. When I received it and tried it on, I was beyond impressed.
What's so special about this basic white T-shirt from Sole Academy?
The Sole Academy Sole Cycle Tee sports a round neckline that sits just above the collarbone, short sleeves, a standard length that falls around the hips, and a seamless design all around. Both the torso and arms of the shirt have a body-hugging fit, so it's not for those who prefer loose tops, but perfect those who love anything that flatters the form. What impressed me the most about the T-shirt was its fabric. The stretchy material clings to the skin without sagging—it effortlessly emphasizes the curves and is ideal for tucking into high-waisted bottoms.
Best of all, the shirt is thick (or as the kids would say, thicc). Those who love white tops know that the number one thing to avoid when shopping for them is see-through fabric that can reveal what’s underneath. The Sole Academy shirt’s double-lined material not keeps your bra's color from peeking through, but also prevents any awkward bulges and stretches, giving you a sculpted and polished overall appearance.
To test out the thickness of the white fabric, I wore the shirt over a bright red bra and to my surprise, the red shade didn’t show through the material at all—my jaw literally dropped. I also purchased the black and beige versions of the shirt, which have the same body-hugging fit and thick, stretchy fabric, but the white remains my favorite. It should be noted that the only possible downside about the shirt is that each shade sports the word "Sole" in all caps up front, meaning it’s not completely plain. But for how good the quality is, I am willing to look past it.
How much does it cost?
High-end T-shirts can quickly run you over P1,000—the original SKIMS tee I was looking for is over P3,000—but Sole Academy’s version is only P995 and if you ask me, worth every peso. And don’t worry, while I purchased it secondhand, it’s still available on the website. In fact, it’s on sale right now for just P700.
How do you style it?
You can wear the Sole Cycle Tee the way you would any basic T-shirt. Pair it with jeans, leggings, shorts, skirts, and even trousers. Wear it on its own or through a jacket over top to dress it up. Underneath, I recommend non-bulky inner wear like stick-on bras, nipple covers, or wireless bras—Uniqlo’s versions would be a great pick. You can even opt to use the shirt for light workouts—so long as you wear a sports bra underneath—as it’s comfortable stretchy material allows for plenty of movement.
