10 Art Exhibits to See in Metro Manila This February

(SPOT.ph) From one art fair to another and gallery shows left and right, February seems to be the busiest month for art enthusiasts and the like.  The numerous exhibitions happening this arts month, in various formats and presentations, showcase the diverse practices of Filipino artists, reflecting past and present-day concerns and future possibilities that they respond to in their work.  

Check out these art exhibits in Metro Manila for February 2024:

ALT Philippines 

ALT Philippines

Now in its third edition, ALT Philippines, comprising nine participating galleries, returns with new rosters of artists, exhibitions, and programs. Dubbed “Project Spaces,” the event will feature special presentations by the artists Geraldine Javier, Oscar Villamiel, Pete Jimenez, Juan Alcazaren, and Isabel Santos. 

ALT Philippines runs from February 21 to 25 at SMX Hall 4, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

With over 50 exhibitors, Art Fair Philippines will hold its 11th edition with iterations of its annual programs and a series of events to coincide with the 10 Days of Art. Derek Tumala and Isaiah Cacnio will present their individual art projects at the Ayala Triangle Gardens.

Art Fair Philippines 2024 is from February 16 to 18, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., at The Link, Parkway Drive, Ayala Center, Makati City.

New York City-based Monica Delgado presents miniature sculptures made of combined acrylic paint and bottle caps. Delgado is an alumnus of the University of the Philippines, where she majored in Fine Arts in Painting. She employs a sculptural approach in her work. 

Runs until February 8 at Artinformal Gallery, The Alley at Karrivin 2316 Chino Roces Avenue Ext., Makati City.

Ayka Go’s Play House represents her recollection and individual memories that she associates with how she constructs the dollhouse in her large-scale paintings. “Ayka Go contemplates the evolution of her artistic journey, with a particular focus on the dollhouse as a metaphor for memory,” states the exhibit notes.

Runs until February 5 at the Finale Art File Gallery, Warehouse 17, La Fuerza Compound (Gate 1), 2241 Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City.

Layering Fragments: The Digital Collage in Postmodern Era

Jet Leyco

Manila-based and award-winning filmmaker Jet Leyco presents a collection of digital collages created and imagined in the postmodern era. Leyco will hold the workshop “Capturing the World: Jet Leyco on Mobile Filmmaking and Collage Art” as part of the exhibit on February 24.  He is known for his films Ex Press (2011), Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na (2013),  Matangtubig (2015),  Second Coming (2019), and For My Alien Friend (2019). 

Runs until February 29 at Yuchengco Museum, RCBC Plaza, Corner Ayala Avenue and Senator Gil J. Puyat Avenue, Makati City.

Kislap-Diwa: 12 Pagtatagpo ng Gunita sa Pamanang Pambansa

The exhibit brings 12 Filipino poets and 12 visual artists together in a collaborative project inspired by 12 of the Philippines' National Treasures. Kislap-Diwa: 12 Pagtatagpo ng Gunita sa Pamang Pambansa is in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA), and the Unyon ng Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL). 

Runs until February 11 at the National Museum of Anthropology, P. Burgos Drive Rizal Park, Teodoro F. Valencia Cir, Ermita, Manila.

Will You Tell Me What I Look Like

Will You Tell Me

Will You Tell Me What I Look Like is a painting exhibit of the same book title by poet and visual artist Raphael Atienza Coronel. Opening the exhibit featuring the same paintings found in Coronel's book was a book launch last February 2.

Runs until February 9 at Everything’s Fine PH, Unit G8, Prince Tower, Salcedo Village, 14 Tordesillas, Makati City.

Void of Spectacles: Reflections on Passages Through Time and History

Mark Orozco Justiniani will present three infinity installation works— Firework, Well, and Arkipelago–versions of which were previously shown in Singapore, Germany, and Italy. “These serve as an excavation of stories, reflections on humanity, and inquiries on existence. At its core, these infinity installations invite the viewer to fall into the very most primal instinct of fear and wonder.”

In The Aesthetics of Engagement, Sam Feleo and Jenny Inumerable Suarez engage with a dialogue through their own processes and materials that they use in their practice. The exhibit dives deep into each other’s approach to their own material: crystals for Feleo and fabrics for Suarez.

Runs until February 17 at the Multipurpose Hall of the UP Fine Arts Gallery, Arts and Design Building, UP College of Fine Arts, Diliman, Quezon City.

El Tiempo De Los Dioses Es Perfecto (The time of gods is perfect)

El Tiempo

El Tiempo De Los Dioses Es Perfecto gathers Colombian artists Daniel Acuña, Fredy Clavijo, Simon Espejo, Maria Leguizamo, Juan Ruge, and Andres Vergara. The works “respond to the self laid bare in the experience of time as a god experience,” writes curator of the show and artist Rocky Cajigan.

Runs until February 17 at the Gravity Art Space Gallery, 1810 Mother Ignacia Avenue, Quezon City.
