(SPOT.ph) I don’t know if you’ve consciously considered your doughnut preferences, but maybe this will awaken something in you, like how it did with me: I’ve met people—yes, plural—who are Original Glazed doughnut purists. These are people who time and time again will only order Krispy Kreme’s famous Original Glazed Doughnuts. Sure, they'd be interested in new flavors but that's as far as they'd go: Curiosity and a piqued interest, sans the investment.
When I would ask them why, the popular answer would be that Krispy Kreme's new flavors tend to be "too sweet," or in some cases they'd find the flavor too experimental. I admit I do see where the purist mindset comes from and, in a way, I can relate to it as someone who always finds herself reaching for the Original Glazed doughnuts in a box of assorted Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
That is unless the new release is extremely interesting flavor-wise, and in rarer cases, a completely different product. For this SPOT.ph Taste Test, I'm not reviewing a new Krispy Kreme doughnut flavor—I'm too pessimistic to gamble, anyway—instead, I'm focusing on a new product altogether: the recently launched Churro Doughnuts.

What is Krispy Kreme’s new Churro Doughnuts?
The first thing that came to mind was that the Churro Doughnuts looked visually good. This was soon followed by, "Did they use Original Glazed as a base for the Churro Doughnut?" As it turns out, they did not.
Krispy Kreme's Churro Doughnuts are your plain doughnuts coated like a classic churro—as in it's generously coated in cinnamon and sugar. In a Facebook post by Krispy Kreme (Philippines), they're officially described as cinnamon-sugar dusted doughnuts served with three dips: a “decadent Dark Chocolate, creamy White Chocolate, and sweet Caramel.” Classic and not too experimental.
And while I did have a hard time getting my hands on a box when it was launched (September 4), my second try was a success. The price is P390 for a box of six Churro Doughnuts, and the box has a special packaging where all three dips are secured in place, for fuss-free dipping for sure.

How does Krispy Kreme's Churro Doughnuts taste?
You know what? The Churro Doughnuts aren't bad themselves. The doughnut is a classic Krispy Kreme doughnut—dense enough that it's filling, but at the same time light and fluffy that it melts in the mouth. The only taste concern I have is that it skews heavily toward the cinnamon note because, at least with the batch of doughnuts I got, there was too much of the sugar coating on it.
And because there was too much sugar, I didn't feel any need to use any of the three dips because it would just make everything sweeter. I'm not saying the dips are not good—they actually are pretty good individually that I want to dip something salty in them.
The Dark Chocolate has a thick consistency and a cocoa taste that reminded me of childhood candies; the White Chocolate has an addictive milkier taste; and the Caramel has this burnt-sugar sweetness and butteriness to it. And if I had to pick a winner between the three, the Dark Chocolate is the better Churro Doughnut dip.
Proportions-wise, I do think there's enough for all six palm-sized doughnuts, but again, this is because there's no need to overdo it with the dips as the doughnuts are already sweet as they are.
It is worth noting that the Churro Doughnuts come in a regular doughnut shape but with "ends." I'm not entirely sure of the reasoning behind this but I found that its distinct shape makes dunking the tip of the Churro Doughnut in your preferred dip easy since the dip containers have a rather small opening.
If anything, I find it interesting that Krispy Kreme didn't use their Cruller as a base for the Churro Doughnuts because I do feel like its ridged texture would make for a treat closer to traditional churros.

Final verdict: Are Krispy Kreme's Churro Doughnuts good?
It's not that I completely regret buying Krispy Kreme's Churro Doughnuts—for the record, I don't. My only issue is that the doughnuts are too sweet and the included dips are borderline unnecessary to the overall taste. And I don't know if it was just specific to the batch of Churro Doughnuts I got but I was kind of shocked and slightly disappointed that the doughnuts weren't served warm.
So if there were two boxes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts in front of me, one with a dozen Original Glazed Doughnuts and the other with a half-dozen Churro Doughnuts, my hands would definitely gravitate to the former. But if I were to reconsider these purist tendencies, maybe if the box of Churro Doughnuts came with a cup of darker brew or a hot dark chocolate drink...maybe then I'd go for the latter.
