Indonesia's Kenangan Coffee Is Now in the Philippines

(SPOT.ph) If you've been to Indonesia, you're probably familiar with Kenangan Coffee, a coffee chain that started back in 2017. Through their close-decade milestone, they now have around 800 outlets across 60 cities in Indonesia; plus other branches in Malaysia, Singapore, and, now, the first (of many to follow) just opened in the Philippines—right at SM Mall of Asia.

Indonesia's Kenangan Coffee opens its first outlet at SM Mall of Asia, Philippines

Kenangan Coffee, much like the ongoing trend business models among other coffee chains, sells affordable coffee you can drink every day without breaking the bank. Avin Ong, Founder & CEO of Fredley Group of Companies, tells SPOT.ph that in the case of Kenangan Coffee, "we're in the middle." He adds, "Some of the coffee chains in the Philippines are very expensive, and some are on the more affordable side."

Ong says that the prices are slightly more expensive if you compare it to the brand's home court (Indonesia). He explains that this is because Indonesia uses Robusta, but those overseas expansions (Singapore, Malaysia, and Philippines), they use Arabica beans that are still sourced from Indonesia.

What's on the Kenangan Coffee menu:

The menu covers the basics of what coffee shops should have—from lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and ice-blended drinks, and even a very interesting Avocado Espresso. If anything, you should first try their signature called the Kenangan Latte. This is described to be a strong but sweet and milky concoction made with coffee, milk, and gula aren, a kind of palm sugar that has nutty and caramel notes.

During the launch, the Kenangan Coffee store also showed a display of food items for coffee pairings. These are the Classic Brownie (P75), Carrot Load Slice (P95), Ham & Cheese Croissant (P145), Tuna Puff (P110), and Chicken Puff (P110). According to Kenangan Coffee's Brand Manager, these pastries use the same recipe as the ones sold in Indonesia but are made locally—perhaps for ease in logistics and food quality purposes.

Where can you find Kenangan Coffee:

The first Kenangan Coffee branch in the Philippines where you can try the namesake signature drink is on the second floor of SM Mall of Asia's Entertainment Hall. It's a grab-and-go kiosk with limited seating, but moving forward, Ong tells SPOT.ph that they do have plans on bigger formats for the coffee franchise such as a standalone store. 

Ong shares that what's on the coffee pipeline is that the franchise will expand in other SM establishments, namely SM Megamall, SM North EDSA, SM Bicutan, SM East Ortigas, and other establishments including more, but not limited to, SM Malls. He says they have a big goal to open 100 branches of Kenangan Coffee in the Philippines by the end of 2025 and cross your fingers that at least one of the 100 will open in your neighborhood.
