Marupok Alert: PH Has the Most Love-Related Playlists in Southeast Asia
The genre tops both playlists and podcasts.
(SPOT.ph) Sharing music has always been a love language, especially in modern-day romance, and what better way to say “I love you” than to make a playlist dedicated to them? Especially, when you're in the Philippines.
Spotify has revealed that there are almost 4 million love-related playlists in the Philippines—the most in Southeast Asia. The same goes for podcasts, where other countries’ top genres like horror or comedy don’t even come close to where love and relationship is on the list.
It’s pretty clear that Filipinos are all loved up this Valentine’s, with more than half of them claiming to be “very happy” with their love life, but what can our listening habits on Spotify say about us?

It’s been long established that Filipinos are marupok, but how this manifests through music-sharing is interesting, to say the least. For one, the kind of lyrics being uploaded on Myday or Instagram Stories can reveal so much about a person’s relationship status. It’s not even exclusive to the weeks leading up to Valentine’s: just open anyone’s social media on any given day.

According to Spotify, almost 70% of Filipinos turn to song lyrics to cope with and make sense of what they’re going through. On social media, the most shared lyrics are from “Give Me Your Forever” by Zack Tabudlo, “Leaves” by Ben&Ben, “Come Inside of My Heart” by IV of Spades, and “Bulong” by December Avenue. Filipinos are also fond of turning to local singers like Sarah Geronimo, Yeng Constantino, Moira dela Torre for comfort.
But it isn’t just music that Filipinos consume on Spotify. Also gaining momentum are Filipino podcasts such as “Barangay Love Stories,” “Dear MOR,” “Walang Kwentang Podcast,” “The Comfort Room,” and “Boiling Waters PH” that people flock to when they want to hear interesting perspectives on love.
Taking all of this data together, Spotify created a Pag-ibig Hub where Filipinos can listen to some of the most popular playlists and podcasts on love, dating, and relationships. The streaming platform will also be dropping more than 50 new podcast episodes starting February 9.
Unconfrontational as we are, Filipinos are great at making parinig to crushes or partners. We might not have the words to express what we think and feel, but we can always count on songs to do it for us.
