(SPOT.ph) The Filipino film industry has never run short of talent. Just recently, the Gawad Urian Awards picked out outstanding movies of 2018, and we now have Pinoy filmmakers who are members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Almost nineteen years ago, there was Anino, a short film by Raymond Red, which won the Palme d'Or du court métrage—the highest award for a short film in the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Anino follows the story of a photographer hailing from the province. Now in the city, he patiently waits at a church for people to approach him to have their photos taken. His encounter with a young man by the church's door makes him reevaluate his choices, setting him off on the streets of Manila.
The film stars Ronnie Lazaro, John Arcilla, and the late Eddie Garcia. Red is considered as one of the pioneer figures of Filipino alternative cinema, who happens to be the father of Mikhail Red, who is also a film director.
