Attention, Local Film Buffs: Cinemalaya 2020 Will Be Held Online
Here's what we know so far.
(SPOT.ph) The local film industry is just one of the many industries struggling to find space and recognition amidst the pandemic. Local cinema has taken strides to bring film to the people from releasing popular movies online for free to holding Q&A sessions featuring actors and industry veterans. Actual theater screenings remain infeasible and film festivals will likely not be pushing through until next year, but here's good news for local film enthusiasts: Cinemalaya 2020 will be holding an online short film festival and competition from August 14 to 23 in place of its usual cinema screenings!
This occasion marks the first time in Cinemalaya's 16-year history that the film festival will be held exclusively through digital platforms and with no mass gatherings. Though it's not quite the same as getting to see full-length features on the big screen, at least you'll still get a taste of original works from local filmmakers and discover more homegrown talent. Not many details have been announced about the online festival just yet, but we're already excited to see what Filipino filmmakers can bring to the table this year. Plus, this time around you can watch the entries in your comfiest jammies—not to mention, safe and isolated from any health risks.
In the meantime, you can check out a rundown of Cinemalaya 2019 entries to get you excited about this year's festival!
