Everyone Watch The Empress on Netflix, Because We Need Season 2 ASAP

(SPOT.ph) In the early days of Netflix's original programming, the streaming platform would typically churn out two or three seasons of a series before deciding whether it's fated for the chopping block. Nowadays, that no longer seems to be the case, with new shows getting canceled before ever seeing a second light (Yes, we're still a bit salty that Archive 81 was canceled after one season. No further questions at this time). The question then becomes, "Should I even bother with an off-the-radar series that only has one season?". Spoilers lie ahead. 

Enter Netflix's steamy new period piece a la Bridgerton: the six-episode German series The Empress. The series has all the makings for a hit within its genre; forbidden compassion, political intrigue, and, of course, secret pregnancies. The last of the bunch served as the cliffhanger for the show's first season, as we've got to know how the unruly Empress Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) leverages her unborn child to her political advantage. Maybe she could take notes from House of the Dragon's Queen Alicent.

Netflix's The Empress Season 2: Potential Release Date and Storylines

Netflix has so far not renewed The Empress for a second season. The first season had its premiere on September 29 and has since consistently remained in the Top 10 of Netflix Philippines, among other regions globally. 

To put this in perspective, the massive hit Bridgerton had its second season greenlit and officially announced a month after its first season dropped. However, pre-production was already underway well before the official announcement. Such is not the case for The Empress.

Should The Empress be renewed for a sophomore season as early as the end of this month, given Bridgerton's timeline, we could see a potential release date within the season of late 2023 to early 2024, at the earliest.

A bit of a way's away, but we're willing to wait, especially with that cliffhanger having Elisabeth essentially pulling a Katniss Everdeen Catching Fire pregnancy announcement at the peak of political tensions. Although, if we're looking at the source material (i.e. actual real-life history), things won't be looking too good for the young Empress when she gives birth to a female child. Oh, how we love the totally justifiable rules of the monarchy.
