10 Exciting Titles Coming to Netflix This October
The season of horror is finally here.
(SPOT.ph) No matter what kind of entertainment junkie a person is, whether it be a classic movie buff, a blockbuster enjoyer, or an arthouse film connoisseur, everybody recognizes the month of October to be the season to marathon horror movies. Heck, even kids watch horror flicks nowadays as a form of introduction to the modern streaming culture.
As such, expect your favorite streaming services to reflect the spooky—and, at times, frightening—month of October with tricks and treats in the form of new horror films. Netflix, in particular, has a few drops outside the neighborhood of Saw movies and Addams Family revivals this Halloween season, so we rounded up the most prize-worthy treats below in our monthly Netflix guide.

Put these 10 Netflix series and films on your watch-list for October 2022:
The School for Good and Evil (Movie)
Release date: Wednesday, October 19
Charlize Theron. Michelle Yeoh. Kerry Washington. No, we did not just name what would be a kick-ass Charlie's Angels trifecta. Instead, they're portraying the professors we wish we had in The School for Good and Evil. Directed by Bridesmaids and Last Christmas director Paul Feig, the fantasy film will have you travel to a Hogwarts-like school, where age-old fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Jack (the one with the beanstalk) took their classes. Only, the school is also shared with the folks training to become the villains of fairy tale stories. Essentially, it's as if all the students of the different Manila universities had to share a campus during the height of UAAP season.
Cabinet of Curiosities (Series)
Release date: Tuesday, October 25
What's shaping up to be the horror treat of the month is Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Yup, the mind behind Pan's Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Hellboy, Pacific Rim—should we go on? We think we should.—Crimson Peak, Blade II, and Nightmare Alley brings us a 10-episode series made up of different kinds of horror, ranging from creature features to outright scare fests.
Even with del Toro being the perfect guy to deliver such a collection, he's still enlisted the talents of filmmakers such as The Babadook director Jennifer Kent, The Empty Man director David Prior, Mandy director Panos Cosmatos, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night director Ana Lily Amirpour, Splice director Vincenzo Natali, and his own regular cinematographer Guillermo Navarro. We tried to keep this list short, but the talent is inexplicable. If you're a horror fan or interested in becoming one, this is the title for you.
Doll House (Movie)
Release date: Friday, October 7
Baron Geisler is back and looks more broken down, self-loathing, and—ultimately—more intimate than he's ever before, in this film about a troubled rock star who attempts to mend his relationship with his long-lost daughter. The drama doesn't have a strong maturity rating, but it doesn't seem to shy away from the frustrating struggles and psychological roadblocks encountered on the road to atonement and self-forgiveness. Hopefully, some catharsis is achieved both for the audience and the lead actor by the end of the film.
The Good Nurse (Movie)
Release date: Tuesday, October 25
You've heard of The Good Wife, The Good Doctor, and The Good Place, but wait until you get a load of The Good Nurse—and no, she's not Pinoy. Based on true events, this thriller centers on a kind nurse and single mother (portrayed by Jessica Chastain) who soon starts suspecting her colleague (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne) to be the culprit behind a series of mysterious patient deaths. Sounds gripping enough but with Tobias Lindholm, the director behind a couple episodes of Netflix's Mindhunter and the writer of the Danish alcohol addiction film Druk ("Another Round"), helming the feature, we wouldn't be surprised if this is the heart-wrenching thriller talked throughout the fall season.

28 Days Haunted (Series)
Release date: Friday, October 21
Speaking of disturbing true-life events, Netflix is also dropping the paranormal investigation series 28 Days Haunted close to Halloween and, sure, we guess you could say this is true-life. One unusual favorite pastime we have on the Internet is looking up videos of supposed ghost sightings or evidence of the supernatural and dissecting them frame-by-frame to debunk the claims. With this Netflix series centered on paranormal investigators spending 28 days at famous haunted locations, we'll either be amazed at the revelations of otherworldly beings living among us or we'll be entertained just by how ridiculous these ghostbusters are. In other words, it'll be the perfect Halloween trick or treat.
The Midnight Club (Series)
Release date: Friday, October 7
Contrary to what you may think, The Midnight Club is not a reference to your group of friends who still aren't allowed out past midnight... despite being 27 years old. No, the 10-episode series is another horror mystery from the mind behind Gerald's Game, The Haunting of Hill House (and Bly Manor), Mike Flanagan. This go-around, Flanagan focuses on patients at a hospice who get together every night and tell each other scary stories. Only, one of them dies just after they collectively make a pact to try and communicate with each other even in the afterlife.
Sounds curiously sinister already, but personally, we're going to binge six episodes immediately upon release, in order to get to the one directed by rapper and playwright Chinaka Hodge. We can't think of a weirder mashup and we're here for it.
Luckiest Girl Alive (Movie)
Release date: Friday, October 7
Fans of the Sunday afternoon trashy mystery thriller reads (a.k.a. your single tita's choice of literature) will be happy to know that the genre is alive and well on screen. Luckiest Girl Alive is a film of such nature, with Mila Kunis starring as a New York businesswoman whose life begins to unravel due to unresolved trauma. It's got all the spicy high-strung woman drama one could ask for; a hidden past that's threatening to resurface, a true crime documentary crew digging into it, and a control freak on the verge of losing it all. The perfect piece of entertainment to curl up in bed and consume, to be honest.
The Stranger (Movie)
Release date: Friday, October 7
A murderer on the run for years (portrayed by Mission: Impossible's Sean Harris) meets a stranger on a plane (portrayed by Joel Edgerton) and the two become good friends. Not a set-up for a punchline, but the premise of the new slow-burn crime thriller The Stranger. No need to add anymore, as the film will ride on its mystery aspect, but also because we were already sold with the looks at Harris' and Edgerton's luscious beards. We will definitely be staring in admiration at them for most of the runtime. No, uh, further questions at this time.
The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself (Series)
Release date: Friday, October 28
If you haven't read the young adult novel Half Bad, think "Percy Jackson but make it sinister" to get an idea of what the fantasy series is going for. Its nine-episode Netflix adaptation, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself adapts the series centered around the character of Nathan Byrne (Jay Lycurgo), the son of the world's most infamous witch (although, the witch is a dude in this story). What the series will offer is a story about nature versus nurture, as it has Byrne test his mettle and show to the rest of the magical world who he really is, for better or for worse.
Glitch (Series)
Release date: Friday, October 7
Rounding out the list is the 10-episode K-drama Glitch. Remember that horror could also come from outer space, as this sci-fi series focuses on a woman (Jeon Yeo-Bin) trying to track her boyfriend down after a supposed UFO abduction. With the appearance of K-pop star Nana in the cast, we're thinking this'll be the zany sci-fi/horror romp of the month.
