Korea and China Lead List of Visitors to the Philippines in 2019

The Department of Tourism counted around 8.26 million arrivals in total.

(SPOT.ph) The Philippines has always been one of the hottest tourist destinations around—literally and figuratively. Just think of places like Siargao, Palawan, and Boracay! And it seems we're not the only ones who like to live it up on our islands: The Department of Tourism recorded 8.26 million international visitors in 2019 alone. This number went beyond the annual target of 8.2 million visitors, a fact the Department of Tourism (DOT)Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat called, "a new milestone in the country’s tourism history."

Topping the list of foreign visitors to the Philippines were the Koreans, with 1.98 million arrivals. Koreans have held the number-one spot since 2010, according to a statement by the DOT. Plus, it looks like they may hold on to the title for much longer as the current number marks a 22.5% increase. At second place were the Chinese with 1.74 million arrivals.

Folks from the U.S. came in third with 1.06 million arrivals, followed by the Japanese with 682,788. Japanese national Yachiyo Imamoto was the Philippines' eight millionth guest when she arrived on December 27. Other nationalities in the top 12 include citizens of Taiwan, Australia, Canada, the U.K., Singapore, Malaysia, India, and Germany.

A total of 7.1 million visitors were recorded in 2018 by the DOT. The jump of more than a million arrivals also means that the DOT is now pushing for sustainable tourism to keep our tourism spots as healthy as ever. Fingers crossed the next few years continue to prove that it really is more fun in the Philippines!
