Here's Everything We Know About Breath of the Wild 2

(SPOT.ph) With the D23 Expo dropping news on all things Disney and Marvel, the Ubisoft presentation announcing five new Assassin's Creed games and a Netflix series, and the PlayStation State of Play making a surprise launch on Tuesday, this week alone has proven that it's an exciting time in the worlds of entertainment and gaming.

Not one to ever miss out on the fun, Nintendo held its triannual Nintendo Direct presentation on Tuesday to show off its exciting upcoming video game titles for the Switch. Even between announcements for Pikmin 4 and Bayonetta 3, it's unsurprising that the most bombshell news from the presentation came in the form of a title and release date reveal for the sequel to the Switch's biggest action-adventure game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Here's everything we know about the sequel to The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom:

The teaser trailer confirms that the sequel to Breath of the Wild is now known as Tears of the Kingdom and will drop on May 12, 2023. What could that ominous title mean? Well, it's no reference to the news of Queen Elizabeth II's recent passing, that's for sure. The subtitles of the Legend of Zelda series rarely lay out specific plot elements; only ever central items such as with Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword or game features like open-world exploration in Breath of the Wild or sea travel in The Wind Waker.

While the teaser doesn't offer much in terms of gameplay footage, we do get a good look and feel of the sequel's new central setting: the skies above the Hyrule kingdom. Based off the previous E21 trailer, we know that a dark and malevolent force somehow lifts Castle Hyrule up into the sky, which prompts Link on his adventure into the clouds, a la The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii.

The Legend of Zelda franchise has been a pillar of Nintendo's gaming brand since its debut in 1986. 18 games in the mainline series have been released, not including the countless spin-offs, Super Smash Bros. appearances, and an, uh, 1989 animated TV series that we dare not speak of. Tears of the Kingdom is the first direct sequel to a previous entry since the trilogy of Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks in the 2000s. It may be premature, but here's hoping we get a similar full-on Zelda trilogy for the Nintendo Switch.
