Tokyo Disneyland's Space Mountain Is Closed Until 2027

(SPOT.ph) Sad news for theme park and roller coaster aficionados everywhere: we're saying goodbye to Tokyo Disneyland's Space Mountain (for now).

The crowd-favorite ride will be closed to the public until 2027. Gone are the days when a trip to Tokyo Disneyland meant being thrown around one of the park's OG indoor rides with many unexpected twists, turns, and minor drops. But don't fret, this closure just means a change is afoot—like Tokyo DisneySea's major renovation that brought us Fantasy Springs.

Here's what we know about Space Mountain's Renovation:

In a statement released by Tokyo Disneyland's operator, Oriental Land Co., Space Mountain will be undergoing a major renovation requiring the ride to be temporarily closed to the public from July 30, 2024 until 2027. This comes after the ride clocked in a total of 22.6 million kilometers since its maiden voyage in 1983, equivalent to 29 round trips between the Earth and the Moon.

The ride's closure was announced on Tokyo Disney Resort's official social media accounts following the conclusion of the resort's goodbye tribute event called Celebrating Space Mountain: The Final Ignition.

Space Mountain fans need not worry about losing the ride for good. Oriental Land Co. assures the public that the new Space Mountain attraction will maintain its original indoor coaster concept, this time with "enhanced performance" and more "immersive special effects."  

And it's not just Space Mountain getting a facelift. Tomorrowland, the space-themed area where the ride is located, will also undergo major changes. According to reports, Tokyo Disneyland invested over JPY 56 billion (roughly P21 billion) to renovate Space Mountain and create an enhanced Tomorrowland plaza.

"The new Tomorrowland plaza will express the connection between Earth and the universe, representing an image of a future where humans are in harmony with nature," says Oriental Land Co. "After dark, the area will draw guests into a spectacular world of light and soundscapes."

Where can you find Space Mountain aside from Tokyo Disneyland:

While waiting for all the renovations to be completed, fans of Space Mountain can still find the ride in four other Disneyland Parks around the world.

For those of us in Asia, Space Mountain is also present in Hong Kong Disneyland as a Star Wars-themed HyperSpace Mountain, although this version is smaller than the one that used to be in Tokyo Disneyland. 

How to Get Tickets to Tokyo Disneyland:

To enter Tokyo Disneyland you need to have a valid park ticket for the day of your visit. Note that tickets for Tokyo DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland are sold separately. Ensure you have the right ticket for the park before you start planning your Disney adventure. You can buy these tickets on the official Tokyo Disney Resort website or through third-party apps like Klook.
