Taste Test: Dunkin's New Coffee Doughnut and Spicy Coffee
Does the thought of coffee in a doughnut or with chili excite or scare you?
(SPOT.ph) In case you haven't noticed it yet, Dunkin' is fast and aggressively expanding its offerings. In the last few months and years, they launched out-of-the-box doughnut flavors such as the Grape-Filled and Halo-Halo doughnuts. When it came to their coffee selection, they have launched a line of doughnut-inspired caffeinated drinks, and they have even explored offering items such as champorado and tomato soup that are pretty unusual for a doughnut-coffee shop.
The latest treat the multinational chain has launched—that is, the new Boston Coffee Kreme doughnut—is exciting for any Dunkin' fan who loves both its cups of joe and sweet pastries. Meanwhile, the new Spicy Caramel Latte is a one-of-a-kind beverage any brave coffee drinker would want to explore. In this edition of SPOT.ph Taste Test, we break down if these new Dunkin' items live up to the hype or if they are only interesting in theory.

Meet Dunkin's new Boston Coffee Kreme doughnut and Spicy Caramel Latte:
It looks like Dunkin' is giving their classic Boston Kreme doughnut a makeover in different ways. After the creation of the Iced Boston Kreme Latte (Drinkable Version), now comes the Boston Coffee Kreme doughnut (Caffeinated Version).
For those who have never tried the classic doughnut, this is a flavor that uses their signature yeast doughnuts, piped with a Bavarian Kreme filling and then topped with chocolate icing. It has a distinct look with its three strips made of white icing. With that, the new Boston Coffee Kreme (P40/piece) is basically a coffee version of the OG flavor as it uses a coffee-flavored glaze (instead of Chocolate) on top, and what we assume is a coffee-flavored custard (instead of Bavarian) in the center of the doughnut.
Meanwhile, the Spicy Caramel Latte (price starts at P120) was launched a few days after Boston Coffee Kreme. While adding chili to coffee is not as common compared to other spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, this spicy coffee is said to be common in Mexico. Based on our order, we found there were a few red specs inside the cup which could be from the powdered chili they add to the coffee.

What does Dunkin's new Boston Coffee Kreme and Spicy Caramel taste like:
As for the Boston Coffee Kreme's taste, it's nothing mind-blowing compared to Dunkin's other doughnut flavors. You get more of the sweetness than the coffee notes with the Boston Coffee Kreme. If anything, it was tempting to dip this doughnut in Dunkin's brewed hot coffee (it's one of the best fast food brewed coffee) just to incorporate the coffee taste in the doughnut.
As for the coffee, as mentioned, it has chili, which (fun fact!) helps bring out the sweetness of other foods. Our qualm with the drink is that it is a little too spicy for our taste. It's the kind of spiciness that doesn't linger on the tongue—it's more of a strong punch in the face (in this case, throat) that knocks you out cold. You can instantly feel the heat when you take a sip—and the moment you gulp there is a feeling similar to what you feel (not taste) when drinking ginger tea.
Yes, spice tolerance is subjective. Some might start tearing up and gulping water at a sprinkle of chili powder on their dish, but we'd like to believe we can handle our spice. So, when we say it's spicy, it is spicy.

What's our final verdict on the Boston Coffee Kreme doughnut and Spicy Caramel Latte:
The Boston Coffee Kreme, while it's nothing spectacular, it's also not that bad of a doughnut. If you decide to try this doughnut, remember to pair it with Dunkin's strong, bitter coffee brew without adding any sugar—or as a guiding principle: This is best simply paired with any drink that's anything but sweet.
As for Dunkin's Spicy Caramel Latte, this is a hard pass. If they had gone lighter with the amount of chili they added to the coffee, this would have made a better composition and made the drink more palatable. Maybe then, we would have at least drank half of this spicy latte we ordered. For now, we recommend that you stick to your favorite, your go-to Dunkin' coffee order when you need a caffeine fix.
