Erik Matti Gives Two Cents on K-Dramas, Calls Them "Faux Cinderella Stories"
Based entirely on the Netflix Top 10 list.
The streaming platform houses a wide library of Asian and Hollywood films and television series—including hit Pinoy shows from the small and big screens, plus several Korean drama series, a.k.a K-Drama. Matti himself has two films showing on Netflix: Kuwaresma (2019) and BuyBust (2018).
On April 16, Matti took to Twitter to make his observations about the popularity of K-Dramas among Filipinos on Netflix. According to the director, these K-Dramas have "faux cinderella stories" and "belofied actors," a reference to the biggest beauty and cosmetic house in the Philippines, Belo Medical Group. He also notes that, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, viewers choose to watch love stories.
As of April 16, 2020, the Top 10 Most-Watched Shows on Netflix consist of K-Dramas, Hollywood shows and movies, and Pinoy films, in that order. Out of the 10 shows, five are K-Dramas: Hi, Bye Mama! (#2), Itaewon Class (#4), Crash Landing On You (#5), Fight For My Way (#7), and What's Wrong With Secretary Kim (#9). Born Beautiful, the only local film on the list, is in eighth place.
Unsurprisingly, the prominent director's statement made some waves. K-Drama has fast become a media staple for Filipino audiences—we know you've heard of Crash Landing on You and Kingdom (and lots of other fun and serious and everything-in-between shows). The strong narratives of K-Dramas have certainly hit a note in viewers, notes Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s vice president for Korean content, especially where CLOY is concerned.
Some Twitter users pointed out that it was only natural for people to cope with the uncertainty of the time with some feel-good shows. Others suggested some of their own favorite K-Dramas that show a different perspective—while some, inevitably, offered up some sass. We round up some of the reactions and leave you to decide which standpoint to agree with!
