10 New Supernatural Horror Titles on Netflix That Will Possess Your Mind

(SPOT.ph) In the month of October, darkness reigns. We don’t mean to sound dramatic. We simply mean there’s nothing better to do this Halloween season than to find a cozy spot in a dark room and load up a bone-chilling horror movie. Like children in a creepy candy shop, audiences today have an abundance of streaming selections when it comes to the different horror subgenres. Yet, this year, we’re looking for something more… otherworldly. We’re on the hunt for strange ghouls, demonic entities, and other supernatural phenomena that’ll truly corrupt our waking dreams. To help you get started on this amateur ghosthunter journey, here are some of the latest supernatural horror titles currently screaming—er, we mean streaming—on Netflix.

Here are new supernatural horror movies on Netflix:

Umma

What happens when you cross the Korean immigrant story Minari, the “allergic to electricity” subplot of Better Call Saul, and a haunting ghost story? Well, you get Umma. The Sandra Oh-starring horror film may often feel like a blender of different genre ideas, but the bottom line is the film makes an effort to explore generational trauma through grimy jump scare-filled terror. If anything, it’d work well with the multiverse movie Everything Everywhere All at Once and the Pixar film Turning Red to form a “My Asian Mom Gave Me Some Baggage” triple feature.

The Doll 3

If the United States has Annabelle and the Philippines has Anak ni Janice, Indonesia’s creepy puppet-looking figure comes out in The Doll film series. Now on its third film, The Doll trilogy makes its closest stab at the Chucky franchise with Bobby, a doll that looks like Chucky’s over-achieving older brother. Bobby is, of course, possessed and terrorizing the couple who summoned his spirit from the afterlife. It’s a bloody entertaining B-horror feature that clocks in at under two hours, so it’ll provide a quick supernatural jolt to your system. However, fans of this kind of sordid shlock will also be happy to know that the first two Doll films are also streaming on the platform.

The Privilege

The Privilege has wannabe supernatural investigators delve deep into the world of fungi-infected monsters. To this movie’s credit, it tries—perhaps, just a bit too much and in all the wrong places. You get the horror film broth of mysterious teenager deaths and evil spirit possessions that end up a bit diluted with underdeveloped love triangles and a surprise horny threesome. Honestly, this German film makes the list for the sheer audacity to just not execute anything well, and, similarly, Halloween wouldn’t be complete without a horror movie to laugh at—not with—with your friends. We’re not psychos, we swear.

The Wasteland

What is essentially a supernatural feature film version of the two-sentence horror story “The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door,” The Wasteland follows a mother and her son living in seclusion out in a desert wasteland, where they begin to be stalked by a supernatural entity. We’re suckers for horror movies that depict the lengths a parent would go to in order to protect their children, and The Wasteland slides right into that category. Yes, hurt us with your wholesome themes but gruesome execution!

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

A 2021 film that no one saw in cinemas, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City recently dropped on the streaming platform and we have to admit… it’s hard not to have a good time with it—and that’s coming from the hard-headed fans of the Paul W. S. Anderson Resident Evil. Memorable zombie violence and stylistic slow zooms add some flair to a rather unsurprising adaptation of the first two Resident Evil games. At least, it’s the closest fans of the video games will get to a proper RE adaptation. Unless, until some producer ever convinces studio execs to bring Lady Dimitrescu to the big screen.

The Old Ways

The Old Ways is a lean and mean 90-minute folk horror film centered on a journalist investigating witchcraft in Mexico, where she gets kidnapped and imprisoned by locals believing she herself is possessed by the devil. It’s a unique take on an exorcism film that surprisingly works as a fantasy thriller as well. “I was drugged and left for dead in Mexico — and all I got was this stupid T-shirt.” vibes? Most definitely. Through its use of drug-infused hallucinations and spooky rituals, the film provides an enriching horror experience, even for the more veteran fans of the genre.

No One Gets Out Alive

The aptly named No One Gets Out Alive is—surprise, surprise—an allegory for the immigrant experience in the United States. Centered on the experiences of a Mexican immigrant in a haunted boarding house, the film is the type of socio-economic horror that’ll make you realize that the true monster is society itself. The Joker was right. Kidding aside, the film is for those in the mood for some on-the-nose social commentary, through the lens of a spooky monster movie, with the ambiguous mystery that’ll have you crying, “What’s in the box?” like a deranged Brad Pitt.

The Exorcist III

In the spirit of “trick and treat,” we’re throwing in a bit of a twist on the rules. While not one of the latest films to drop on the streaming platform, The Exorcist III is oft one of the more overlooked horror films, even for the more experienced binge streaming divers, so we’d consider it a treat should it end up being a new title recommendation for some folk. 

Those who would stop merely at the first Exorcist film are missing out on what is arguably the greatest jump scare of all time in The Exorcist III. The film as a whole moves away from the demonic possession body horror of the first film and goes for a more soul-sucking procedural vibe, with dreary hospital hallways and lifeless psychological institutions being the primary setting. However, the three-quel remains equally challenging in terms of faith and belief. It’s a horror film that explores the feeling of hopelessness faithful people inevitably feel at one point in their religious lives. Yet, one will undoubtedly feel empowered and enlightened at the end of the—at times, emotionally difficult—watch.

Freaky

The only horror comedy on this list, Freaky is best known as the modern slasher riff on the body-swapping comedy Freaky Friday. Only, this film has a 17-year-old high-schooler portrayed by Kathryn Newton magically swap bodies with a notorious serial killer portrayed by Vince Vaughn. The film has all the devilish charm of a Spooktober classic along the lines of Wes Craven films like Scream, Deadly Friend, and Shocker. Plus, they struck the comedic goldmine of having Vaughn act like a teenage girl stuck in a grown man’s body. There’s a certain comedic icon-making potential here that’s long been absent from modern comedy films.

Feng Shui

Finally, we have a supernatural horror film that is soon to premiere on Netflix. The 2004 Kris Aquino film drops on October 14 and we’re looking forward to reliving the superstitious fears we once had when we first watched the movie—on the ancient form of communication known as cable TV. The film’s hauntings begin when its lead Joy acquires a feng shui mirror that blesses her with good luck, or so she thinks. What actually follows are a series of creepy and demonic hauntings that strangely still resonate in the mind after all these years. If anything, this Halloween, we think we’re up to dabble in a bit of a nostalgic revisitation.
