(SPOT.ph) When it comes to famous statues in Baguio City, Benguet, the first thing that comes to mind is the Lion Head statue along Kennon Road. But over the past few days, it seems as though the king of the jungle is no longer the only animal on the Baguio mountainside. Enter the random beagle head. This stone-carved bust is on a random mountainside along Naguillian Road—you know, that other road headed to the City of Pines aside from Marcos Highway and Kennon Road. What's more surprising is that the statue isn't entirely new— but it did get a very swanky recent makeover.

If you're coming from La Union and are headed to Baguio City, keep your eyes peeled for this unusual mountainside attraction. The "Lamtang Dog Head," as it is marked on Google Maps, is on a mountainside property near the Baguio City border marker in Barangay Irisan. It's a huge beagle head watching over the different residential properties in the area.
Baguio's Public Information Office announced its inauguration over the weekend. Even going as far as inviting more people to take selfies at the site. "Check it out in Brgy Irisan, Baguio City, and tag us to your PAWsome selfies!" their post reads.
Despite being an arguably "cute" attraction, it did get mixed reactions from the crowd. Some comments were happy with the beagle bust, saying it made the view much better. However, there were also some comments asking the all-important "Why did we need this?". Commenters questioned why it was a beagle instead of the famous St. Bernard in many Baguio tourist photos or even the aspin. TBH, we're also a bit lost on this one. We mean, don't get us wrong. We're suckers for man's best friends here at SPOT.ph, but did we really just carve a mountain to feature a random dog?
Searching the Internet for answers, we realized that the beagle statue at Barangay Irisan isn't entirely new. Turns out, it's been around for a while—possibly 2012 or 2013 as a Reddit commenter remarked.
"Originally, it was just a quirky mural done by the land owners [on their] private property, so not really a tourist spot. This was around 2012-2013, and then it got sponsored by TopBreed around 2016(?). It looked like shit the past few years since it wasn't maintained, possibly due to the lockdowns. Looks like Top Breed sponsored another repainting."
TopBreed Dog Meal, a commercial producer of animal feeds, has its logos all over the online posters and other onsite collaterals during the launch of the beagle statue.
After some sleuthing, we managed to find a photo of what this figure looked like a couple of years back, and well, let's just say we can see the improvement.
The next time you're driving along Naguillian Road, you won't miss the huge beagle head statue behind TopBreed posters—it's part of the ad, after all.
