(SPOT.ph) Mochi could well be the darling dessert of Japan that practically needs no introduction. But warabi mochi? That’s the lesser-known, shy variant-slash-cousin that fewer people have had the chance to get to know. If you didn’t get a chance to try it on your umpteenth trip to Japan, no worries—Japan's Warabimochi Kamakura is bringing its deliciously chewy treats to the Philippines in a few days.

Japan's Warabimochi Kamakura is opening its first Philippine store at SM Megamall
Warabimochi Kamakura, a brand beloved in Japan with multiple branches across the country, has been making waves internationally; there are branches in China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, the U.S.A., Australia, and very, very soon, the Philippines. For its first Philippine branch, Warabimochi Kamakura is opening at SM Megamall—more specifically at Level 3, SM Mega Fashion Hall—on January 12, Sunday.
For those who have no idea what warabi mochi even is and what makes it "not like other girls"—or "not like other mochi" in this case—here's a bit of a primer. This Japanese delicacy is made of warabi (bracken starch) instead of rice, which gives it an especially bouncy, jelly-like texture. It's typically served coated with kinako (roasted soybean flour) and/or served with kuromitsu (a Japanese black sugar syrup with a deep, dark, caramel-esque taste), though other variations exist too. Warabimochi Kamakura is one of the most popular stores in Japan that offers this particular mochi variation.
What's on the Warabimochi Kamakura menu?
Warabimochi Kamakura's menu for its Philippine debut is limited to two flavors of Warabimochi: Original and Matcha. There's a dine-in exclusive of Warabimochi Original (three pieces) with Matcha or Coffee for P380, and Warabimochi Matcha (three pieces) with Matcha or Coffee for P460, but if you want larger, good-for-sharing portions, you can get 10 pieces of the Warabimochi Original for P480 and 10 pieces of the Warabimochi Matcha for P550, and both options come with a Matcha or Coffee beverage too.
Say you just want to taste just the Warabimochi and see what the hype is all about, the best option is to get the Warabimochi Original Cup (two pieces) priced at P180 and the Warabimochi Matcha Cup (two pieces) priced at P230. You have the option to add ice cream for P50.
As for the Warabimochi beverages, you can get Luxury Strawberry Milk (P250), Luxury Strawberry Yogurt (P260), and Lemonade (P230) for those who are steering clear from caffeine, but for those who love coffee and tea, Warabimochi Kamakura has Asakawa-en Matcha (P265/hot or iced), Tenku Hojicha (P250/hot or iced), Coffee Milk (P230/hot or iced), and Matcha Lemonade (P250). All these drinks have Warabimochi sinkers; the no-sinker options are Coffee (P150/hot or iced) and Tenku Matcha (P200/hot or iced).
