(SPOT.ph) Does Manila have the makings of being a dining destination, in the same way that Bangkok or Singapore (heck, even Tokyo) are? We'd like to think we're on the right path to becoming of that caliber, especially with more local establishments being recognized on a global scale. In 2019, we had a number of Manila restaurants land on the esteemed 50 Best Discovery list. More spots would be added to the list as the years went on, and fast-forward to 2022, the list now also includes the likes of Hapag, Metronome, Bar by East, and other well-loved restaurants in and around the Metro.

These restaurants in and around Manila are now on the 50 Best Discovery list:

Apart from the dining (and drinking) spots that were already on the list in previous years—namely Blind PigOtoThe CuratorToyo EateryGallery by CheleMecha UmaRaging Bull Chophouse & Bar, The Back Room, and Helm—the 50 Best Discovery list also recognizes the following:

  • Contemporary Filipino spot Hapag in Quezon City, the menu of which the Discovery list calls a "boundary defying romp through the Philippines’ tropical ecosystems"
  • Modern-French maven Metronome in Legazpi Village, Makati, what with their "well-executed" dishes fashioned by Chef Miko Calo
  • Under-the-radar cocktail spot Bar by East in Marikina, hailed as an "architectural firm by day, cocktail bar by night"
  • Poblacion bar Buccaneers, recognized for their "immense" collection of rum
  • OG fine-dining gem Antonio’s in Tagaytay, which serves "mouth-watering French-favourites" in a "colonial-era mansion" setting
Hapag, known for their playful ways of taking on Filipino classics, is now on the 50 Best Discovery list.

You can thank the 50 Best brand, a.k.a. the folks behind The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants lists, for bringing us the Discovery List. Featured in the database are restaurants and bars that have received votes from the 50 Best experts, consisting of some of the world’s leading food and drink writers, chefs, restaurateurs, and other esteemed names in the food industry. In compiling entries, the experts take the brand's other lists and rankings into account—but also extend beyond the establishments on the list, resulting in a more diverse lineup of spots well worth discovering.
