(SPOT.ph) While the cinemas may still be drowning in all the man-tears and body oil brought about by last week’s premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, the month of June is looking to provide a refresh to the movie scene in a big way. The upcoming month sure is looking to prove that cinema releases aren’t slowing down, as we’re getting big blockbusters, horror, animation, a rom-com, and a musical biopic all within the next 30 days. It’s definitely looking closer to how it was pre-“the end times,” so we rounded up the movies coming out this June you should be on the lookout for.

Here are the movies to watch in cinemas this June:
Jurassic World: Dominion
Release date: Wednesday, June 8
Throwing it all the way back to the Jurassic period, the first major release of June is the trilogy-capper Jurassic World: Dominion. If you recall, the previous movie, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, ended with Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and company setting the dinosaurs loose in Northern California. This next film picks up four years later with dinosaurs now running free around the entire (uhm, Jurassic) world. This definitely sets up Dominion to have a fresh storyline and innovative action sequences, as the previous films have mostly been relegated to the titular theme park on Isla Nubar. It should also be a fitting end to the saga, with the original film’s trio Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill all returning.
Lightyear
Release date: Wednesday, June 15
Also making his cinematic return this month is Buzz Lightyear, now voiced by none other than Chris Evans! This Buzz Lightyear is notably not the toy from Toy Story, but instead, the action-adventure space hero that the toy line is based on. This standalone sci-fi flick will have Buzz literally go to infinity and beyond, as he breaks through space and time as well as facing off against Emperor Zurg, all in an effort to get back home.

Ngayon Kaya
Release date: Wednesday, June 22
After a two-year delay, the fittingly titled Ngayon Kaya is finally having its premiere in cinemas this month. The rom-com stars Paulo Avelino and Janine Gutierrez, who we previously saw co-star with each other on the local show Marry Me, Marry You. Now, the two will bring the spice to the big screen with this story centered on their will-they-won’t-they best friendship.
Elvis
Release date: Wednesday, June 22
Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis movie recently made headlines for its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival garnering a 12-minute standing ovation from the audience. Especially since Austin Butler was cast as the titular King of Rock and Roll, we’ve been curiously excited about this musical biopic, which is Luhrmann’s first film since 2013’s The Great Gatsby. It looks big and bombastic enough, with musical sequences that look fun enough to dance to and Tom Hanks in heavy make-up and doing an accent. We won’t say no to that.
The Black Phone
UPDATE: The Black Phone has been delayed to July 2022.
Horror is back in town with The Black Phone, which centers on a supernatural case of missing children. The film puts director Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil) back together with his Sinister star Ethan Hawke for this creepy tale, wherein Hawke stars as the mysterious masked kidnapper. It looks exactly like the type of low-budget, interesting concept horror movie that becomes a cult classic in a few years’ time, so count us first in line.
Minions: The Rise of Gru
Release date: Wednesday, June 29
Capping off the month of June are the stars of those random, unrelated-to-the-movie Facebook memes your tita likes to share on Facebook: The Minions. The yellow, walking memes are back in their sequel, which now focuses on their early days serving their 12-year-old master Gru (still voiced by Steve Carell, don’t you worry). Perfect fodder for you to take your kids to—or a date, to see if they’re still mentally stuck in the 2010’s, perhaps.
UPDATE (June 09, 2022): The article has been updated to reflect the recent delay of The Black Phone to July 2022.
