(SPOT.ph) The summer movie season is back in full swing for the first time since pre-pandemic times! While we’ve definitely enjoyed watching Netflix streaming titles from the comfort of our home, there’s just nothing that beats watching entertainment spectacle on the big screen. And with local cinemas collectedly operating under the Alert Level 1 guidelines, it seems that it’s finally time to get back into the groove of catching our anticipated popcorn flicks in the cinemas.
We got the picks for the movies to watch and mark on your schedule.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Release date: Wednesday, May 4
Popcorn Pedro says: Marvel is back to kick off the summer movie season, and they’re doing it with the outbreak of the multiverse. You’ve seen Spider-Man (Tom Holland) deal with the multiversal shenanigans of his infamous villains in last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home, but now get ready to witness Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) deal with the real horrors and chaos of the multiverse, in a film directed by horror-fantasy mastermind Sam Raimi. The Master of the Mystic Arts will enlist the help of the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) as he encounters interdimensional tentacle monsters, sinister variants of himself, and even what looks to be Sir Patrick Stewart returning as Professor X. Only time—and one trip to the cinema—will tell.

DC League of Super-Pets
Release date: Friday, May 20
Popcorn Pedro says: Meanwhile, DC is giving us a look at the super-life through the eyes of their heroes’ pet sidekicks. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as our leading good boy, Krypto the Superdog, who must assemble his own team to save the Justice League from the clutches of Lex Luthor. The Rock is reunited once again with comedian Kevin Hart, who we’ve seen together in two Jumanji movies, Central Intelligence, and Hobbs & Shaw. We also got the incredible voice talent of Keanu Reeves as Batman, Kate McKinnon, Marc Maron, John Krasinski, and Ben Schwartz on the cast. This light, action-comedy will definitely be a treat that’ll get you your DC superhero fix.
Top Gun: Maverick
Release date: Wednesday, May 25
Popcorn Pedro says: This May, we’ll be headed back into the danger zone after nearly 40 years. The long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick looks to already be the high-octane action flick of the summer, with what looks to be breathtaking fighter pilot flight and dogfighting sequences. Yet, I’m a simple person. All I ask is that the movie, like its predecessor, provides gorgeous sunset shots set to a romantic 80s soundtrack and sequences of shirtless dudes being way too competitive over beach volleyball. Throw in those with Tom Cruise risking his life flying real jets every few minutes or so? Hell, I’d catch that in IMAX.
