(SPOT.ph) Ah, Star Wars... an elegant franchise, for a more civilized age. For a couple generations, Star Wars was a pillar franchise in the sci-fi/fantasy and space opera film genres. Before the Dark Times. Before the panini. Now, audiences around the world mainly get Star Wars-pilled via six to eight-episode-long streaming series on Disney+ every few months.
After the financial and critical disappointments of their most recent outings Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker back before the plague, it's not a surprise why Disney would showcase what the galaxy far, far away can do on television, especially after The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian proved that television could be a space for these type of stories.
However, Star Wars was born on and made for the big screen, and who else is Disney getting to bring about the rebirth of their beloved sci-fi/fantasy property? None other than Thor director Taika Waititi.

Here's everything we know about Taika Waititi's upcoming Star Wars movie:
Best known as the director of Thor: Ragnarok and the recent Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi was announced to be directing a new Star Wars film on Star Wars Day (May the 4th) 2020. It's worth noting Waititi previously directed the series finale of The Mandalorian's first season back in 2019, wherein he also voiced the bounty hunter robot IG-11.
The film will be co-written by Waititi and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the Oscar-nominated writer who co-wrote the war film 1917 with Sam Mendes and the psychological thriller The Last Night in Soho with Edgar Wright.
The film begins filming next year, as Waititi is still trying to figure out the story. He stated that the film, as of the writing stage, "feels very me." He did clarify that it'll explore new characters and edges of the galaxy and that it "won't feature Chewbacca's grandmother," or anything like that.
President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy confirmed it's the next Star Wars movie that'll come out, the first film since the main Skywalker Saga concluded with its ninth entry The Rise of Skywalker back in December 2019. Given that filming is planned to start early next year, we could see Waititi's Star Wars film as early as late 2024. Gee, that's only, like, 74 Marvel titles away!
Besides the two recent Thor films, Waititi is also primarily known for his dramedy films like the Nazi coming-of-age film Jojo Rabbit, for which he won an Oscar for writing, the old-man-gets-stuck-with-annoying-kid film The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows.
Waititi also has acting credits in recent films such as Free Guy and The Suicide Squad, as well as a voice role in the Pixar film Lightyear. Could we see his bounty hunter robot make a reappearance in his Star Wars film? Time will tell.
Given the variety of the projects he's worked on in his career, it'll definitely be more than a coin toss to see where his Star Wars film will take us too. It's hard to predict a guy who gave us a film about a young boy who had Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend (who Waititi also chose to star as). All we can hope for is a Star Wars movie that doesn't turn Twitter into a battlefield as red as Crait.
